U.N. Security Council Condemns North Korea, North Korea Restarts Nuclear Program

Monday the U.N. Security Council officially agreed to condemn North Korea’s April 5th missile launch which was in violation of 2006 sanctions.  In response, North Korea said it was boycotting six-party negotiations and resuming its nuclear arms program.

How Provocative!

Even without support for an actual resolution, the U.N. Security Council managed to pass a non-binding presidential statement to demonstrate the unanimous disapproval for North Korea’s violation.

How could the North Korea be so arrogant, dismissive, and even derisive?

U.S. To Iran: Hello is Anyone There… Hello?

In light of Iran’s recent claim of now running 7,000 uranium enrichment centrifuges and Iran’s president Mahmoud Ahmedinejad declaring the nuclear issue a closed case, State Department spokesman Robert Wood said the U.S. was still waiting for a response from Iran to engage in talks.

Apparently the U.S. and other U.N. Security Council nations don’t understand that a lack of a response is a response.  Actually Mr. Ahmamembersonlyjacket clearly stated he would only sit down on condition that there were no conditions.

While the U.N. Security Council holds numerous “emergency meetings” that only result in the member nations agreeing to disagree, Iran and North Korea seem quite content to pursue their nuclear ambitions without impunity while our allies in their respective regions begin to realize exactly what George Bush understood.

Shintaro Ito, Japan’s vice minister for foreign affairs, who flew to New York to press for added sanctions, said before Thursday’s talks among the council’s major powers that the credibility of the Security Council would suffer unless diplomats react quickly to the launch.

“If we don’t do adequate and swift action for these serious violations, the existence of the Security Council as a meaningful institution will become doubtful,” Ito said.

“The adequate reaction is to adopt a resolution,” he said. “This is a serious problem for regional peace and security. And also this is a big test for the United Nations Security Council.”

Better check that cowboy diplomacy Ito…

Dr. Oddlyenough or How Iran Stopped Worrying and Learned to Build the Bomb

According to the Daily News, the NY District Attorney’s office uncovered plot by a Chinese national to smuggle nuclear weapons materials to Iran.

Okay, I’m not going to touch on China’s involvement here - though it amazes me how Russia and China always seem to be involved in helping rogue countries gain nuclear capabilities, always seem to agree on the need for nuclear arm controls, and the first to always urge restraint when dealing with these same rogue countries start testing these capabilities.

No bother, in light of this new evidence, I’m sure the U.N. Security Council will immediately draft a scathing memo to Iran requesting they please stop right after they deal with North Korea’s provocative act.
