Updated: Arlen Specter, We See Your True Colors Shining Through

According to the Fox News ticker, it appears that Arlen Specter (R-PA) is switching parties and will be running as a Democrat in 2010.

The Washington Post quotes:

“I have decided to run for re-election in 2010 in the Democratic primary,” said Specter in a statement. “I am ready, willing and anxious to take on all comers and have my candidacy for re-election determined in a general election.”

He added: “Since my election in 1980, as part of the Reagan Big Tent, the Republican Party has moved far to the right. Last year, more than 200,000 Republicans in Pennsylvania changed their registration to become Democrats. I now find my political philosophy more in line with Democrats than Republicans.”

Personally I have no problem with Arlen Specter switching to the Democratic party… this should have happened 20 years ago as far as I’m concerned. Honestly, he’s been a Republican in name only if you consider his voting history on abortion, spending, and immigration. I’d say he’s the Republican equivalent of Joe Lieberman but Lieberman is an honest man. Plus Lieberman never abandoned his political or moral philosophy for self-preservation, his political party just abandoned him.

At any rate, Obama was thrilled by the news. On the verge of a filibuster proof majority in the Senate, Democrats have a lot to be thrilled about.

Thanks for the memories Mr. Specter.
